The history of computing technology in L. E. Maistrov’s works

This is an attempt at the analysis of the works of L. E. Maistrov (1920-1982), one of the first Russian historians of computing technology. He is the author of two classical publications, “The development of computing machines” (1974, coauthored by I. A. Apokin) and the catalogue of computing machines stored in the museums, private collections, and institutions of the USSR (1982, coauthored by O. L. Petrenko) as well as many articles devoted to different types of arithmometers. His other outstanding accomplishments include deciphering the marks on tally sticks, assessing the role of the abacus in mathematics, and introducing for scientific use the data about computing devices stored in Russian museums.
