Academician V. I. Vernadsky’s letter about the state of the Rumyantsev museum library

(Российская государственная библиотека)

The letter concerning the problems of the Museum Library, written by Academician V. I. Vernadsky to the head of the Rumyantsev Museum, is introduced for scientific use. Having lived in Moscow for many years, Vernadsky had extensively used the books from this library’s collection and was well aware of its disastrous state. Being the Head of the Commission for Scientific Institutions and Organization of Scientific Work in Russia, he forwarded a letter to the Director of the Rumyantsev Museum V. D. Golitsyn on the 15th of April, 1917, in which he asked what measures the Museum management believed to be helpful for improving the situation with the library. As a result, the Museum Council decided to forward to Vernadsky’s Commission the documents describing the Library’s needs and wishes, later followed by the materials concerning the entire Museum. Unfortunately, this story has no continuation as, due to the October Revolution, the Commission led by Vernadsky ceased to operate.
