Projects for the development of water transport in the Ural region at the end of the 19th – early 20th century
Rukosuev E. Yu.
Until the end of the nineteenth century, and despite the ongoing massive construction of railroads, rivers and waterways continued to serve as the main transportation system inside Russia. Because of its lower costs, water transportation was used primarily for the bulk products of agriculture and industrial resources, leaving more expensive and urgent cargo for the railroads. This study describes the development of water transportation in the Urals and its main function of exporting the products of the local metallurgical industry to the country’s central regions. The growing agricultural trade and industrial output in the area inspired several projects aimed at the improvement, development, and further construction of canals, including the proposal for a TransUral Waterway to connect the Kama and the Ob – Irtysh river systems.
