On the social history of genetics during the late soviet period (1970s – first half of the 1980s). Materials from the Novosibirsk research center

During the 1970s, the development of Soviet genetics still faced some lasting aftereffects from the period of Lysenko’s rule. Support for research on heredity had resumed, but an open critique of the earlier abuses in the history of Soviet genetics was not permitted. International exchanges in science were complicated by Cold War political, bureaucratic, and language barriers. By focusing on archival documents and materials from the Cytology and Genetics Institute of the Siberian branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, the article discusses the development of the material infrastructure for research, the political and ideological context of geneticists’ work, and their contacts with foreign colleagues.
