A «new» cartographic source on the project for reorganizing border defense lines in Siberia during the 1760s

A collection of «Plans of fortresses and outposts between the rivers Bukhtarma and Irtysh» from the Russian State Historical Archive contains rich data on the history of Siberian border fortifications in the 1760s. The article provides historical criticism of this important source and its previously unpublished cartographic information that complements other existing sources. The «Plans» reveal how the location and the structure of the lines, the types of fortifications, and their significance evolved over time. Reconstruction of the existing buildings reflects the changing characteristics of the area and emerging trends in the administrative and socio-economic policies of the Russian Empire.
