The Academy of Sciences as hosted by the Demidov family: The first Russian museum and Academy library after the fire of 1747

For twenty years after the devastating 1747 fire, the Library and Kunstkamera (museum) of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences were housed in the private home of the Demidov family on Vasilievsky Island. The article relies on documents from the Demidov collection at the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts to discuss why this location was chosen, why the collections stayed there for so long, who was able to use them and how, the role of M. V. Lomonosov in decisions regarding the relocation, and the relationship between the owner of the house and the administration of the Academy.
