A possible depiction of a Greek measuring device in a 12th-century Novgorod cathedral fresco

The fresco devoted to St. Florus from the Nativity of the Theotokos Cathedral (1125 AD) in Novgorod’s St. Anthony Monastery contains a new source for the history of medieval science. It depicts a measuring device in the form of a linear template with five divisions. This form is unusual for the early Rus, where linear measures were typically divided into four.
