The Russian engineer Boris Loutzky: a short biographical chronicle

Using some new sources, the article analyzes Boris Loutzky’s work be- tween 1865 and 1900. The famous engineer proposed a number of pioneering inventions in the internal combustion engine (ICE): the first six-cylinder ICE with vertical cylinders, an original method that used injection of fresh air into the combustion chamber during expansion, and the first semi-spherical chamber. He also designed a reversible ICE that allowed changing the direction of rota- tion, so that ships could use it for reverse movement. Loutzky also designed a unique yacht, the «Tsatitsa,» with a 500 hp engine and three original aircrafts in 1908–1913.
