The Development of the Geothermal Energy Industry in Kamchatka: Problems and Solutions

,

The first Soviet geothermal power stations – Pauzhetka and Mutnovka – were built in the volcanic areas on the Kamchatka peninsula. The article describes the technological and logistical problems that their designers had to solve and reveals the important role of fundamental scientific research for the exploration of geothermal sources. The success of the work depended on the relationship between two agencies – the Kamchatka Regional Geological Directorate and the Institute of Volcanology that belonged to the Siberian branch of the Academy of Sciences. The essay also discusses the biographical backgrounds of several people who played important roles in the stations’ construction.
