The USSR’s World Data Center on Planetary Geophysics, 1957–1960

A World Data Center on planetary geophysics was established in the USSR as a result of international negotiations and agreements in preparation for the International Geophysical Year, 1957–58. The article analyzes the organizational principles of the Center, the manpower and resources that were required for its operation, and problems that had to be overcome. In particular, the political realities of Cold War confrontation created significant obstacles for the Soviet and international scientific communities regarding the exchange of geophysical data. Only after solving this difficulty could international research in geophysics intensify, and the positive results of cooperation provided a model for subsequent work on complex scientific problems by the global community of geophysicists.
