The importance of documenting technological monuments in 3D: The case of the Shukhov tower

, ,

This article discusses the case of three-dimensional documentation of a large engineering structure, the famous Shukhov tower in Moscow, which is currently threatened with destruction. The Center for the Virtual History of Science and Technology at the Institute for the History of Science and Technology undertook laser scanning and 3D modeling of this technological and architectural monument in 2011–2012. These techniques allow highly accurate recording of the form and geometry of complex technological structures. In combination with designs and other traditional forms of documentation, which contain information about internal constitution and elements, laser scanning allows the possibility of creating precise and detailed 3D models of technological objects of any size.
