Research on ancient science at the IINT in the historical context of the 1930s


This essay examines research on ancient science conducted by the Soviet Academy of Sciences’ Institute for the History of Science and Technology from 1932 to 1936. During these years, the historians working at the Institute included S. Ya. Lur’e, M. Ye. Sergeenko, I. A. Borichevsky, M. Ya. Vygodsky; in addition, M. A. Shangin, S. V. Melikova-Tolstaya, and O. A. Dobiash-Rozhdestvenskaya also collaborated with the Institute. The article devotes particular attention to how ideological and philosophical tenets, as well as political topics of the day, manifested themselves in these scholars’ publications and influenced the results of their investigations.
