Public education of graduate students in Soviet and post-Soviet science: A comparative analysis


This article relies on available statistical data for the comparative analysis of state policies and trends in graduate education and in the training of research cadres in Soviet and post-Soviet Russia. The dynamics of the numbers of researchers and graduate students in research institutes and universities, the character of graduate research in the social sciences, and changes in the cultural value and functions of graduate studies are taken into account. It is possible to conclude that graduate studies in Russia no longer fulfills the function of training qualified researchers for Russian science and higher education.
