A floating laboratory: The research vessel Akademik Vernadsky and its contributions to science


This essay describes the contributions to oceanography and to the physics of the oceans accomplished with the help of the research vessel Akademik Vernadsky of the Marine Hydrophysical Institute. Many of the Institute’s researchers took part in the research vessel’s expeditions and projects organized by geophysicists V. V. Shuleykin and A. G. Kolesnikov. Participation in international research programs extended the geography of ship’s travels worldwide.
